    Energy Saving Initiatives

Louisville Metro Government has been an ENERGY STAR partner since 2007. The LEA partnership works closely with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s program , ENERGY STAR, to reduce energy consumption in commercial buildings through 3 primary initiatives:

    • The Kilowatt Crackdown

This annual competition between building owners and operators promotes energy efficiency awareness and rewards businesses with the most efficient buildings and businesses with the greatest energy improvements.

"In our efforts to improve the environment in Jefferson County and to be good stewards of our resources, each of the 168 facilities in the Jefferson County Public School District was entered in the Kilowatt Crackdown competition for 2010. The Louisville Energy Alliance, along with Energy Star®, provides a wonderful opportunity to challenge our nearly 100,000 students to conserve energy. Our hope is that the entire district learns the benefits of energy conservation at our facilities and in their homes. Benefits include energy cost/consumption reduction and a cleaner healthier environment."

    • Annual Commercial Energy Efficiency Expo

The Louisville Energy Alliance Commercial Energy Efficiency Expo helps businesses learn more about the practices and products that are available to help improve energy efficiency. This year’s expo will take place on October 11, 2012 at the Louisville Convention Center.

    • Partnership with ENERGY STAR

The Louisville Energy Alliance has partnered with the federal government’s ENERGY STAR program to help provide an abundance of tools and information to help businesses drive down their energy usage.

ENERGY STAR's Portfolio Manager Tool is extremely helpful in evaluating a property’s current efficiency and in tracking the property’s efficiency improvement progress.

“ENERGY STAR’s utility monitoring program is an excellent tool for managers to evaluate the effectiveness of their conservation efforts. Whether a property is new to benchmarking or a veteran, ENERGY STAR provides a basis to compare your property’s performance with other similar buildings and the best part is there is zero cost to the user.”

    The Louisville Model

The Louisville Energy Alliance is proud of the progress that Louisville businesses have made over the past two years. Currently, 35 Louisville buildings have earned the federal government’s ENERGY STAR efficiency rating. This extraordinary effort has not only saved Louisville businesses millions of dollars in energy expenses, it has also helped position Louisville as an environmentally friendly place to live and work.

"Through the Kilowatt Crackdown, the Louisville Energy Alliance is leveraging the ENERGY STAR platform to help building owners achieve greater energy performance with measurable results, as part of the Mayor of Louisville's effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions community-wide. The Louisville Kilowatt Crackdown is a model program for any community that is looking to promote improvements in commercial building energy performance to lower energy costs and protect the climate."
